There are several methods of applying fertilizers: some prefer granular fertilizers, others – liquid or crystalline fertilizers, which are added during watering. Professional sports lawn care specialists often use a combination of different types of fertilizers, as they understand that a balanced diet is the basis for grass growth, maintaining its health and beauty. The composition and concentration of fertilizers vary depending on the season, so it is optimal to fertilize the lawn in the spring, summer and autumn.
Spring lawn fertilization
After the winter period, the grass comes out of dormancy, and it is important to help it recover, replenish the lack of microelements and stimulate growth in preparation for the warm season.
In the spring, the lawn needs nitrogen fertilizers (N), which stimulate recovery, healthy growth and compaction of the grass cover. Nitrogen is a key element for the synthesis of chlorophyll, which gives the lawn a rich green color. Nitrogen fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate, urea, ammonium nitrate or nitroammophoska (30 g per m²) are suitable for this. The complex fertilizer Yara Mila Complex 12-11-18 is also suitable for primary spring fertilization.
Yara Mila Complex is a chlorine-free, water-soluble fertilizer containing nitrogen for initial growth, potassium, prolonged phosphorus for rooting and microelements such as iron, manganese, zinc and boron. Spring fertilization with complex nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer helps to strengthen the rolled lawn, accelerate seed germination and improve root development. This ensures moderate growth, bright green color, healthy grass cover, density and resistance to diseases, and also improves the soil’s ability to retain moisture.
When to fertilize the lawn in the spring?
Granular fertilizer can be added to the substrate prepared for the lawn when sowing grass. The first fertilization is carried out in late March or early April, when the snow has completely melted and the soil has warmed up to +10…+12°C. It is advisable to have time to apply fertilizer before the rainy season. After 1–1.5 months, in early May, you can repeat the fertilization.
After applying fertilizer, it is better to water the lawn or fertilize it before the rain, adhering to the dosage recommended by the manufacturer. The average application rate of Yara Mila Complex fertilizer is 20–40 g/m², for fertilizers with a high nitrogen content – 20–60 g per m².
Summer lawn fertilization
In summer, use complex mineral fertilizers Yara Mila Cropcare (11-11-21), Kristalon Red (12-12-36) or Kristalon Cucumber (14-11-31) for fertilization. Kristalon fertilizer dissolved in water (0.5–2 g/l or 0.05–0.2% solution) is optimal for the summer period. Universal mixtures Kristalon Special Plus (20-20-20), Kristalon Special (18-18-18) and Yara Folicare (18-18-18) are also suitable.
Yara complex fertilizers provide plants with macro- and microelements necessary for active growth. Summer fertilization maintains the health of the lawn and its resistance to heat, drought, pests and diseases. The high potassium content helps the grass grow back quickly after mowing.
When to fertilize a lawn in summer?
The optimal period for fertilizing is from late June to mid-August. It should be done in the morning or evening, when the temperature is lower, which reduces the risk of overheating. In summer, fertilizers are applied 2-4 times at intervals of 10-30 days, depending on the air temperature and precipitation.
Autumn fertilizing and preparation for winter
In autumn, the lawn begins to prepare for the winter period. It is important to remove leaves from the lawn to prevent rotting and the transmission of diseases. For lawns older than a year, they are mowed, aerated, verticulated, reseeded, sanded and fertilized in autumn.
Autumn fertilizing helps the lawn recover from summer stress and prepare for winter dormancy, saturating the root system with nutrients for easy passage through frosts and comfortable wintering.
Autumn fertilizers for lawns are enriched with potassium and have a moderate content of nitrogen and phosphorus. Phosphorus-potassium mixtures such as Kristalon Scarlet (7.5-12-36), Kristalon Orange (6-12-36), Kristalon Brown (3-11-38) or potassium sulfate Yara Tera Krista SOP are suitable for this. Potassium sulfate is applied at a rate of 5 g / m², after which the lawn is watered. Watering should be abundant to stimulate root growth.
When to fertilize the lawn in the fall?
Potassium-phosphorus fertilizers are applied in September, after the last mowing. They are suitable for all types of soil, and the high potassium content strengthens the turf, supports the restoration of damaged areas, promotes successful wintering and maintaining the appearance of the lawn for the next year.
Regular fertilizing of the lawn depending on the season helps to maintain its health, rich color and resistance to stress, providing a beautiful appearance and high endurance all year round.
